What is Mold?
Mold is a form of fungus that is commonly associated with damp and musty areas such as bathrooms, basements and attics. Travelling through the air as tiny spores, mold thrives, breeds and spreads in wet and moist areas. Mold can grow and take hold within 24-48 hours following a water intrusion.
Exposure to Mold
Short term exposure to indoor mold can cause health issues for both humans and animals, including infections; allergies; skin irritations and toxic reactions.
Prolonged exposure to high levels of indoor mold can result in serious long term health risks including, but not limited to:
- Bleeding lungs
- Respiratory problems
- Memory loss
Any home or building may contain mold. However, those that have had water damage, leaks, floods, fires, high humidity, dampness, and that have problems with indoor air quality, are more susceptible to mold growths.
Some obvious signs of indoor mold include:
- Blistering paint
- Dark stains on stucco, ceilings and walls
- Water stains
- Rusty nails
- A musty smell or odor
- Reoccurring black lines in the grout
Mold Removal, Inspection and Prevention
It doesn’t take much for mold to take hold: in fact, mold can grow and thrive in humidity levels as low as 65% to 99% at the surface on which they grow.
Therefore, keeping indoor humidity low (below 50%) can help to prevent its growth. In a nutshell, control the moisture and you control the mold.
However, if already present, consider professional mold removal and inspection services.
