Last month we blogged about a recent National Post article that reported Toronto, and the Greater Toronto Area (GTA),  is experiencing a serious grow-op epidemic. One of the most common dangers associated with grow-ops and former grow-op homes are mold, and more specifically, toxic black mold.

Toxic black mold belongs to the Stachybotrys family. On a small level, this mold causes allergy aggravation like other molds, which includes symptoms like runny noses, itchy eyes and sneezing. It also causes extremely serious symptoms in humans that can lead to death, including:

Stachybotrys cannot be identified visually – even by its telltale black colour – because there are hundreds of thousands of species of mold and fungi out there, many of which are also black in colour and indistinguishable from Stachybotrys without a professional mold inspection and laboratory testing.

It’s the law

Your real estate agent is required to tell you if a home you’re interested in was a known grow-op. If this is the case, undergoing a mold inspection can be the difference between choosing the right home and choosing the wrong one and becoming seriously ill. A home inspection will not catch the hidden mold growing behind walls, in attics and under carpeting. Hiring a certified mold inspection company will and is the best way to ensure your family stays healthy and happy in their new home.
