Mold Spurs Rash of Complaints at Don Jail

Seventy-five prisoners and guards complained of health issues due to mold at Toronto’s venerable Don Jail last year alone.

The Don Jail has been temporary home to Toronto’s remanded prisoners since before Confederation. Completed in 1865, the original structure was added onto in the 1950’s and boasts an Italianate design. The original building was closed in 1977 but the rest has been in continuous use since it was built.

Nowadays, we complain of cheap construction methods that don’t last. That wasn’t the case in the mid-twentieth century and it’s both a blessing and a bit of a curse. The building’s sturdy structure has meant it’s required very little in the way of renovations over the years. However, that very longevity is the root cause of its current mold problems.

Mold was first discovered at the very end of 2012 and was cleaned up in April of 2013, resulting in the rash of formal complaints.

Old Buildings & Mold
Older homes can also last for many years and many homeowners enjoy the beauty of high ceilings and the kind of features and decorative work that newer homes just don’t include anymore.

However, those sturdy walls can be hiding leaks and moisture build up that can turn into mold infestation within 48 hours. Even a pinhole leak in plumbing can produce enough lingering moisture to result in mold – and once it’s gotten into your HVAC system, it can end up anywhere in your home.

  • If you smell a persistent, musty odour or you or a family member is experiencing flu-like respiratory symptoms, a nagging cough, skin, eye or throat irritation, you probably have a mold infestation.
