We often talk about the importance of ventilation in the basement and crawl space of a house – naturally, since that’s a very common place for moisture and dampness to accumulate and it’s often a poorly ventilated area. However, other areas of the house are vulnerable to moisture build up and therefore mold growth too. The most obvious are those where using water is part of the room’s function, like the kitchen and bathroom.
Multiple Benefits of Fans
Installation of a good fan in both of these rooms will bring you multiple benefits.
- They will remove odours and improve indoor air quality overall.
- They will also help to remove moisture and decrease humidity levels.
Moisture is virtually always present in kitchens and bathroom, so it’s essential to ventilate and avoid excessive moisture build up. The moisture alone can damage wood and other building materials along with leading to mold growth.
Time to Replace Your Fan?
Even if you already have a fan, you should consider whether it should be replaced. Older fans may not be moving much air around, and they probably aren’t energy efficient. A new generation of energy efficient models are available and they’re generally quieter than older fans too.
There are two basic types of fans:
- Impeller fans – they’ll look similar to airplane propellers
- Blower fans – these look like hamster wheels – generally the preferred type
Exhaust Systems
A step up from a simple fan, an exhaust system draws the moisture and odours in and release them outdoors via a system of ducts and an exterior exhaust hood
- They may or may not use a fan
- A central exhaust system draws moisture and odours from several rooms to the outside via a system of ductwork
- An HRV or heat recovery ventilator fulfills the same function as a self-contained system with an intake and exhaust. It too can also be connected to several rooms

Mold Detection
We can help pinpoint areas of your home that require better ventilation or other measures to deter or remediate mold growth. In our mold detection inspections we conduct temperature and humidity checks through your home or business. During removal and remediation we recommend the use of negative air pressure machines and HEPA filters – which safely permanently capture the microscopic mold spores.

The RCMP has come up with a good idea, one that will protect prospective homeowners from environmental threats like toxic mold. But a closer look at the plan suggests the RCMP may not be doing enough.
In theory, the plan is smart. The RCMP will deploy officers to investigate marijuana grow operations and place any home found to be a grow-op or former grow-op on the RCMP website on a special list.
The problem: the homes will be removed from the website after a year. That means anyone whose home is infested with toxic mold can simply hide the problem for a year. There are plenty of ways to mask toxic mold without eliminating it, such as painting over it or covering it with wallpaper. Doing so doesn’t stop the mold spores from causing respiratory illnesses such as asthma; it only hides it from potential home purchasers.
The problem highlights how important it is to have a certified mold inspector check out any new home you buy or are interested in buying. A mold expert knows about threats like grow-ops and will know all the places to check for hidden mold.
Ideally, the RCMP would keep the grow-op homes on a permanent list. That way, mold inspection and removal companies would know which houses require special attention. But, unfortunately, that isn’t the case. For now, it’s up to prospective Canadian homeowners to be proactive.
If you’re worried about a house being a former grow-op, don’t take the owner’s word for it just because it isn’t on the RCMP’s website list. It could easily be a grow-op home that hid its mold for a year. If in doubt, get a mold detection company to check out the problem for you.

The Global Hygiene Council – the same folks who taught us that the kitchen cloth is the dirtiest thing in a North American home – recently conducted a study in eight different countries to find what the dirtiest item was in homes across the globe.
As it turns out, it’s that grungy seal around the bathtub. A total of 39 per cent tested positive for various molds. As for bacterial contamination, they also rated higher than the inside of refrigerators and computer keyboards.
Bathrooms can be an attractive home for mold, which needs three things to establish itself – warmth, humidity and organic material to feed on. This criterion is easy to find in a bathroom, especially after a long hot shower.
Mold in the bathroom is also difficult to fully remove, because cleaners like bleach only kill the mold on the surface – not the roots. A professional mold inspection can help you determine if the mold in your home is dangerous or run-of-the-mill mildew. Meanwhile, there are a few other places that mold are likely to hide:
Inside of your air conditioner – Because of their moisture levels, most window-unit air conditioners are havens for mold – which then infiltrates the air in your home. When purchasing an air conditioner, ensure it’s a variety that can be effectively cleaned. If you have a central air conditioner mold can enter the duct joints if they’re not sealed properly and the same problem can arise, but this is far more difficult to detect on your own and requires a professional mold inspection.
In carpets and upholstery – Mold can settle in softer surfaces and be difficult to remove. The vacuuming or disturbing of these surfaces can release the mold, aggravating asthma and allergies.
Around or inside of appliances that use water – This can mean your refrigerator drip tray, under and around a leaky washing machine or inside of humidifiers that aren’t running properly.
Mold can be found in many more places than one might realize, and there are plenty of areas within a home that are hospitable to mold growth. This mold can be harmless and unsightly, or toxic and cause illness. However, the various species can’t be identified as either without professional mold testing, which is the first step to ensuring a mold-free home.
