Summer storms can bring flooding and mould

These hot, humid summer days are leading to some serious thunderstorm activity in the Greater Toronto Area.

Big floods are rare, but they can happen with increased storm activity resulting in higher water levels in rivers and streams, along with sewer overflow. Your home may be susceptible to flooding without extreme weather if your eavestroughing is clogged, the ground around your home slopes inward or your basement foundation has cracks or leaks.

Mould is one of the largest problems homeowners will have to face after a flood, and it’s rarely harmless. Just recently, the Peguis First Nation near Winnipeg experienced a severe flood that left about half of the homes in the area with toxic black mould. Residents, especially young children or those with compromised immune systems, were complaining of coughs, rashes and other unexplainable symptoms that were later attributed to the mould, after which the homes were evacuated.

A flood presents mould with the last factor it needs to grow: moisture. The others include a food source like dry wall and a warm temperature which can be anywhere from just above freezing to 40°C.   If you do encounter a flood, both your insurance company and a mould removal company should be contacted.

Most mould removal companies specialize in flood damage, and realize that moisture can remain deep inside some materials long after they feel dry to the touch. A mould inspection should be done as soon as possible, because mould can grow quite quickly, even after a small flood and especially in cases where the water damage has long gone unnoticed – like a leaky pipe, for example.
